Long Beach Flea Market

This past weekend Chris and I woke up at the crack of dawn to visit the Long Beach Flea Market. The last time we came to this particular market we found our awesome shabby chic coffee table that we were able to get for a fourth of the original price (!!!!). So naturally, we were pretty excited to go back.

I had a few things in mind that I've been needing/wanting, but I also knew I'd more than likely find things I didn't even know I was looking for (typical). Chris was on the hunt for some interesting vintage books. He has a huge collection from his Bunicu (Grandpa) and is always looking to expand it.

I love going to flea markets for so many different reasons. It's amazing to see how people take ordinary objects and transform them into new pieces or something with a completely different function than the original. It's also a great place to get inspired by all the creativity around you. Not to mention all the unique people you get to meet and exchange project ideas and design stories with. For me, it doesn't get much better than that.

We started out our morning at a local coffee shop called Makai. Bright and early, we pretty much had the place to ourselves. Except for the cutest little seven year old and her dad having an early father's day breakfast date complete with card and present. So adorable!

We split a piece of spinach quiche that was so much better than your average coffee shop. If we weren't planning on going to the flea market, I would have ordered a few more slices to-go!

The coffee itself was top notch. Exactly the kind of energy boost we needed for a full day of treasure hunting. I love the contrast in our drinks choices. A true 'his and hers' look to this photo :).

Then it was off to the flea market! Because it was father's day, there weren't as many people here as normal. That's always a welcomed change from the often overcrowded aisles of the market. 

This company was really awesome. They take vintage items and add lighting to them for truly unique pieces. You can see more of their collection at Filament Vintage Lighting.

Things to bring with you:

1. Cash!

   Few (if any) vendors accept credit cards so make sure to bring your green! This is also a good way to keep yourself in check and not buy everything in sight...

2. Sunscreen!

    You will be outside for at least a few hours with little to no shade. Chris and I both applied sunscreen before heading in and we still got a little red :/ I now have a lovely purse strap tan/red line across my shoulder. Ha!

3. A Hat!

   The last few times I've gone to the flea market hatless and I was miserable. Wearing a hat keeps the hot sun from scorching the top of your head. If you wear a floppy hat, you also get the bonus of extra coverage for your neck and shoulders.

4. A Bottle of Water and Snacks!

  There is very limited food options at this flea market. Basically one stand of hotdogs and burgers that is not at all appetizing or appealing. Some vendors sell water bottles but it's few and far between. The food stand is also cash only, so make sure you bring enough to eat or drink if you need to!

5. A Backpack or Small Cart!

   You need a way to carry around your new-found treasures, and ten trips to the car just isn't going to cut it. Curbside pickup is available for larger items, and most vendors will let you purchase the item and then pick it up at the end of the day.

6. Comfortable Shoes!

  I wore some comfy flats and my feet were still aching by the end of the day. I'd recommend wearing tennis shoes or sneakers to be safe.

And last but not least, you're going to need your Negotiation Skills.

The best part about shopping at a flea market is that most vendors are happy and willing to barter. You might be surprised with what you are able to get for your money! The best deals are made at the end of the day when people are starting to pack up their items, so if you can make it till then it is usually worth it!

Parking is free, and there is an additional parking structure for overflow parking as well. There are clearly marked signs to get you to where you need to go, which always makes things much less stressful.

All in all it was a great day. I found so many cool things...from purses to vases, to vintage tea plates and so much more. Keep an eye out for my flea market finds in upcoming blog posts!
